Local knowledge to design crime prevention projects

ECHUCA residents are being encouraged to design crime prevention projects and increase public safety as part of a new $25 million investment in the Community Crime Prevention Program.

The new grants, eligible for local councils and not-for-profit groups in the Murray Plains region, are part of the latest round of funding aimed at creating practical solutions to local crime and safety issues by those who know best.

“Local communities are best placed to identify crime problems and develop solutions that are unique and targeted,” Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said.

“These grants ensure that crime prevention projects draw from local knowledge and expertise to generate practical solutions that work for everyone in our community.”

Groups can apply for funds from $10,000 up to $25,000 depending on the project.

Eligible projects include ones that focus on helping prevent crime relating to community facilities and in public spaces.

These funds can potentially upgrade security equipment, and improvements to local spaces.

Other projects are designed to build community awareness and educate people about home safety, and theft in their areas.

Applications for this latest grant round will close Friday, October 18 2019.
