After a strong pre-season, the Moama under 14 footballers were keen to get their season started against SGR at Rushworth.
The first quarter was tight early with both teams peppering the forward line.
Moama’s persistence paid off, banging on four goals late in the quarter on the back of strong play from captain Maisyn Douglas, ruckman Tom Boylan-Roberts and centre half forward Archie Peat.
Ty Verhey kicked a late goal going into the break on the back of some really strong efforts.
In the second quarter Sam Hooppell controlled the centre bounces and used the ball well to set up more forward entries, with goals resulting to Jack Pell and Oscar Richards.
Vice-captain Archie Connors controlled the backline and had great support from Ryder Clark and Harry Limbrick.
The conditions were warming up heading into the third quarter, but the Moama boys kept pushing and shared responsibility across the ground.
Liam Hearn, Harry Thompson and Curtis Wood created plenty more opportunities through the middle and kept the ball in Moama’s forward half.
The final quarter saw boys from both sides tire, but the Moama defence held firm not allowing SGR to score.
Overall a great team performance with lots to look forward to for the rest of the season.

MFL U14s — Moama v Tongala
Perfect footballing conditions greeted the junior Magpies on Saturday, their first competitive match for the season.
After a long pre-season, the boys were eager to get into action.
The first quarter saw Tongala get the early jump, kicking the first four goals of the game.
Under siege, older players Grant Hope and Ben Paterson stood tall, while first year player Jye Jarrett showed that he was ready for the step-up.
The second quarter saw a tighter contest, with Noah Langborne leading from the front.
Strong quarters from first year players Zac McKenzie and vice-captain Mitch Bell helped the Magpies to play a more competitive type of football.
A flat third quarter allowed Tongala to kick further ahead, while the back line did well to repel multiple attacks on goal.
The final quarter showcased some brilliant competitive football from both teams, with players from both sides willing to do whatever it took to win the ball for their team.
A disappointing first round ended in defeat, but showed plenty of positives and areas for improvement.
Youth Girls — Moama v Echuca
From the first bounce in our inaugural season, the Moama youth girls football team never gave up.
A hard fought contest saw the Magpies come up against a bigger more mature side in Echuca.
The girls effort to tackle, chase and be involved in the contest was very pleasing.
Niah Bacon was everywhere, and Payton Hearn’s hardness at the ball was to be admired.
Our entire backline had their work cut out for them, but they did not stop.
The in and under work from our girls and efforts in the chase was great to see.
The scoreline may not have reflected the contest, but with 85 per cent of the team playing in their first game ever, to say our coach Matt Mackay was proud, is an understatement.
