The new Tongala plant, penned to begin construction in the second half of 2019, signals a return to rendering for Greenham after closing a similar facility in 2004.
The organisation said the plant will increase the sustainability of the business and reduce road traffic in the surrounding area.
The rendering plant will process animal by-products into stable, usable products such as tallow and bone meal used in the manufacture of soaps and stock feeds.
HW Greenham and Sons began operations in Tongala in 1993 and has since grown into a multi-million dollar meat export business and a success story for the Goulburn Valley region.
Greenham said the new plant will be designed in accordance with best available practice and methods and adhere to strict Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria standards.
It will be fully enclosed, with odour captured through hoods and sent to a bio-filter. With current rendering processing undertaken off site, the plant will also reduce the number of truck movements entering and leaving the Finlay Rd premises.
‘‘Greenham has been a significant contributor to the Tongala community since 1993 and this new investment in the rendering plant not only increases the sustainability of our local business, it also further reinforces our commitment to the Goulburn Valley region,’’ HW Greenham and Sons chief operating officer Darren Maloney said.
‘‘As part of EPA approvals process, Greenham is undertaking a consultation process to seek feedback from the community.’’
A community drop-in information session will be held at the Tongala Football and Netball Club from 4-8pm on Wednesday, March 20 to allow the community to learn more about the project, speak to technical experts and provide feedback on the project.
A separate planning permit application process, including community consultation will be undertaken with Campaspe Shire Council.
An agreement will also be required with Goulburn Valley Water to accept waste water from the proposed plant.
