Gannawarra Shire Mayor Charlie Gillingham and fellow councillors opened the $3.4 million project as part of a morning of celebrations, which coincided with the monthly Cohuna Farmers and Makers Market.
“It was fantastic to see the Cohuna community come together and celebrate this special occasion,” Cr Gillingham said.
“These improvements, which have created new spaces for residents and visitors to gather and socialise, have already been embraced by the community, which was evident during the project’s official opening.”
Inspired by the development of the Waterfront Masterplan for Cohuna, Koondrook and Kangaroo Lake, the Cohuna Waterfront Development included:
• Improving connections between Garden Park and King George St, highlighted by new paths, lighting and outdoor dining spaces;
• The installation of a jetty at Garden Park;
• The creation of the Cohuna All Abilities Play Space at Apex Park, which celebrates Cohuna’s rich links to Gunbower Creek and the agriculture sector in a manner that people of all abilities can enjoy; and
• Implementing traffic calming measures around the Apex Park and Cohuna Recreation Reserve precincts, including the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis Rds, and additional parking at Apex Park.
“These improvements have added to the popularity of Garden and Apex parks, which has grown since the creation of Cohuna Beach and the redevelopment of the Cohuna Skate Park,” Gannawarra Shire chief executive officer Geoff Rollinson said.
The Cohuna Waterfront Development was made possible thanks to a $1.7 million contribution from the Victorian Government, with support from the Federal Government’s Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program enabling the creation of a new seating area at the corner of King George and Sampson Sts.
“Council thanks the state and federal governments for their support for this project, which will benefit residents and visitors alike for many years to come,” Mr Rollinson said.
