The initiative, organised by Carlton and United Breweries, sees a draft class of AFL legends pull the jumper on for an often-struggling community club to help support grassroots football.
Clubs right across the state can nominate for the draft, with entries open until March 29, with the six lucky clubs chosen to then complete a ‘draft’ to determine the player they will have represent them.
Recently retired Richmond star Trent Cotchin and Hawthorn and Geelong great Isaac Smith headline the 2024 crop, revealed as participants last week, with The Carlton Draft commissioner Jonathan Brown promising more superstars will be revealed in the coming weeks.
“Carlton Draught is synonymous with footy and The Carlton Draft 2024 continues our long history of supporting the great game,” he said.
“Six lucky clubs across Victoria will get six absolute superstars lining up for them this year, drawing in big crowds and providing a financial boost.
“Having Trent and Isaac launch the campaign this year showcases the depth of talent for the 2024 draft crop. I’ve been hard at work recruiting and can’t wait to reveal what other stars we have locked in to return to the footy field for this year.”
Essendon great Matthew Lloyd is the latest player announcement, with the final three draftees to be revealed over the coming weeks.
The 2023 edition of the event saw Nilma Darnum, Carngham Linton, Buchan, Murrabit, Maryborough and Moyston Willaura earn the rights to the former players for a game, with Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley selected first overall by Nilma Darnum.
Seymour export and Fremantle games record holder David Mundy, Hawthorn premiership star Jordan Lewis, Sydney gun Josh Kennedy, Melbourne and Adelaide best and fairest winner Bernie Vince and Port Adelaide 300-gamer Kane Cornes made up the remainder of last year’s draft class.
