From 10.30am, Shirley will open up her lawn and patio at 57 Elizabeth St, Echuca for guests to enjoy a delicious morning tea for anyone in the community to join.
Guests can enjoy door prizes, a raffle, games such as bocce and croquet, a silent auction with electrical items, hair products, and Milwaukee Power Tools, and many sweets and treats.
Shirley is hosting the event to honour loved ones affected by cancer, past, present and future. She hopes to start a tradition.
“(I) decided to do a fundraiser for my loved ones who have had cancer, still do or maybe will have, given the odds,” she said.
“I plan to make it a yearly event.”
The menu includes slices, sandwiches, scones, quiches, and 36 cupcakes donated by Grinders Cafe Echuca, decorated in Cancer Council colours.
The first raffle prize is a crocheted rug created and donated by a three-time cancer survivor.
“She did it while going through her rounds of chemo and through her recoveries, giving her something to focus on other than what was happening,” Shirley said.
“All her suffering and angst, her wishes for the future and her love for life were crocheted into this rug.”
Shirley will also be selling snoods, a head covering often worn by people who lose their hair during cancer treatment.
“(I’m) calling it ‘Snoods for Sisters’, we can wear them in sisterhood to take away the stigma some people feel about being a recognised cancer patient,” she said.
Shirley is one of more than 24,600 registered Biggest Morning Tea hosts who have raised almost $3 million so far in 2024.
Entry is $10, with a special gift for those who bring along a friend.
