The Emus, fielding their oldest side for the year, were ready and raring to go in near-perfect conditions.
The Emus began nicely with a couple of first-quarter goals, only to be matched by Maryborough with a couple of its own.
The Emus had plenty of the ball, but their disposals were letting them down early with costly turnovers.
After the break, they tightened things up to remain in the contest.
Damian Hammond, Garner Smith and Kevin Dunque put in a massive game, preventing scoring and setting up attacks from the back half.
Chris Hagan and Lucas Walker were busy through the middle, giving the forwards many opportunities, with Walker kicking a nice set shot goal.
Justin Voss was leading strongly and Jon Beach got himself a couple of goals and celebrated in style by clapping himself.
The second half was a really tight contest with both teams having a real go while still playing in the spirit of masters footy.
Lyndon Neville and Toby McCoy were getting their hands on the footy out on the wing and took some important marks.
Jeff Abela was busy all afternoon, never giving up on the contest.
At three-quarter time, it was Maryborough that held a slight 11-point lead.
The magnets were thrown around and Voss went into the ruck, Abela into the middle, Rob Guerra on to a wing, Tanner Christie to centre half-forward and Mark van Poeteren to forward pocket.
The Emus had 20 minutes of the season to go and were fired up going into the last quarter.
Three last-quarter goals to van Poeteren, finishing with four, and two to Christie helped get the Emus over the line by eight points.
Voss and Walker combined well to get first use of the ball and get it into the Emus’ forward line.
New player Nathan Evans was fantastic in the backline and will remember being showered with water in the middle of the Emus song to close out a great day for the club.
The Emus travel to Shepparton in a fortnight's time for the annual mini carnival, with 10 clubs from across country Victoria attending.
Training will continue on Wednesdays at Echuca South Oval from 6pm.
New players are always most welcome to join in the fun.
