On Tuesday, October 14, Travis and Nicole Williams announced on the business’s Facebook page that they had sold the much-loved cake supply store, marking the end of nearly a decade of ownership.
When asked about their decision, Travis’s answer was short (and sweet): “It was just time.”
“We were ready to slow down, take a break, and have a change,” he said.
“Together, we have run seven-day businesses since 1999.”
Before launching Cake Matters Shepparton, Travis and Nicole could hardly have had a better CV in the GV, having owned Billy’s Bakehouse and The Cheesecake Shop.
Naturally, it didn’t go unnoticed.
“There was a Cake Matters in Melbourne owned by a friend, and he approached me multiple times to see if I’d be interested in helping him expand the brand and open up a Cake Matters in Shepparton,” Travis said.
“I said no, no, no — but maybe one day.”
And as it often does, “one day” eventually arrived.
Initially considering opening the store in Echuca, Travis’s search for premises instead led him to a strip of shops on Vaughan St in Shepparton.
Travis, Nicole and family poured all the right ingredients into making the cake shop a success — a lick of paint, new flooring and plenty of icing in stock.
“We were all very hands-on; we did all the work to make this shop come to fruition,” Travis said.
“That’s been the most rewarding part, seeing the business start from nothing and grow to be thriving and profitable.”
Stepping away from such a business is undoubtedly challenging.
But when family is woven into that venture?
The decision becomes even more difficult.
“Our daughters, Paris and Emmerson, have both worked in this shop over the years and both have wonderful careers now, so it’s definitely bittersweet,” Travis said.
“Time flies when you’re having fun, and we’ve enjoyed the journey, but things change, and it’s time to slow down.
“We hope our loyal customers will continue to frequent Cake Matters and support the new owners and staff — we really want to see the business succeed.”
Travis and Nicole extend their best wishes to the new owners.
They also expressed their gratitude for the support and patronage of their loyal customers and staff over the years, as well as the friendships they’ve made along the journey.
Cake Matters Shepparton stands proudly on Vaughan St, continuing a legacy that has now been passed down.
