Echuca police have confirmed old human remains were found at the north-west side of the Victoria Park precinct on Friday, February 13.
Construction workers at the site, which is undergoing a multimillion-dollar upgrade, notified police of the discovery.
Echuca police Acting Detective Sergeant Andrew Aujard said police had assessed the bones as being “quite old”.
The remains will undergo forensic testing with the Coroners Court.
Police could not confirm the circumstances surrounding the individual’s death, or whether it would be treated as suspicious.
Det Sgt Aujard said police were continuing to check the area, and more information would be available in the coming days.
Campaspe Shire Council was advised works that are “well away” from the discovery would be allowed to continue while an investigation is under way.
Director of communities Jo Bradshaw said the council’s primary concern was the care and respect for the unearthed material.
“We need to deal with what’s been found, sensitively and respectfully. When we have more information, we’ll be able to assess likely impacts on the development project,” she said.
“Until then, it is a matter for the Coroner and police, and we continue to adhere to the state government’s legal requirements and protocols.”
