Rutherglen staged a final-quarter comeback to defeat Wahgunyah at Wahgunyah in their Good Friday clash on April 3, delivering an exciting game for a big Good Friday crowd.
Despite Wahgunyah controlling much of the contest across the opening three quarters, Rutherglen surged late, piling on five goals to one in the final term to snatch a memorable victory.
Poor foot skills hurt Rutherglen throughout the match, with turnovers in crucial areas of the ground providing Wahgunyah with scoring opportunities and helping them maintain control for much of the day.
Key contributors for the winners included Tom Kilpatrick, who finished with three goals and took a number of strong contested marks, while James Tanner was influential with his run and strong contested work forward of centre.
Lucas Tafft also played a crucial role, competing consistently both at full-back and in the ruck.
Wahgunyah showed significant improvement under the guidance of coach John Luci, demonstrating control over much of the match before Rutherglen’s late surge.
The Cats now head into a bye this weekend while the rest of the Tallangatta & District Football League completes Round 2.
The side will then regroup ahead of an away clash against Dederang Mt Beauty at Mt Beauty.

Strong performance from the Rutherglen Cats this week with a convincing win over Wahgunyah Lions.

Cats 8.5.53 lost to Lions 10.8.68
After a slow start, the team showed great resilience, rallying in the third quarter to level the scores. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to carry that momentum through to the final siren, with Wahgunyah finishing strongly to secure the win.
To remain competitive, we’ll need to deliver a consistent four-quarter performance. That said, there were plenty of positives to take from the game, with players continuing to develop and find their rhythm as a team.

This week we travelled to Wahgunyah to take on the Lions at their home ground under perfect sunny skies. From the very first bounce the Cats on ball brigade lead by Noah Cracknell, Cody J Wood and Seve Cottam were on fire, with clean ball movement and consistent pressure around the ground applied by the whole team with Logan Field making the most of his opportunities at Full Forward.
The Cats put together a terrific team effort running out comfortable winners and notching up their first win for the season in a game that was played in good spirits. Well done Cats.

Round 2 saw us up against Wahgunyah at their home ground.
The young Cats started strong and kicked the first 3 goals straight and Wahgunyah started the second quarter strong, but with our midfield on fire and the back six keeping the ball away from their goals we were able to keep the pressure on and kick away.
The third and fourth quarters saw more of the same with a great team effort and lots of pressure led by Lenny G in the midfield and Kydo up forward who ended up with 3 goals 1.
It was a great win. Great effort.
Awards: Lenny G – Corowa Chocolate Factory; Kyden – J.Lawler; Austin – North East Marine, Blair – Coaches Award.

Lots of rotations required as it was a scorcher.
The Cats had a lot of different combinations which is a testament to the versatile players we are lucky to have in this side.
Captain Kath was courageous and took a big tumble fighting for possession, leading from the front as always. With a bit more time to gel, we can get there next time.
Awards: Kath Bartlett - RFNC $80; Georgie Upton – Adroit Insurance $25.

Girls played a great game today even though the score didn’t reflect it. It was neck and neck for the first 3 quarters then the fatigue and heat got to us.
The team will try again for the win in two weeks against DMB.
Awards: Chelsie McLeod - RFNC $60; Lucy Brown – Movere Pilates.

Cats 30 lost to Lions 67
A hot second round for our U17s against fierce competition in Wahgunyah.
The team was able to stick tight with them at the beginning of each quarter, before dropping off a bit, and picking up toward the end.
Captain Milly Morris was a level head for us, directing play and always being a safe pair of hands.
The Cats take a week off with things to work on, including consistency and safe passes. Thanks to the U15s who benched and played for us also, who stepped up well for their first taste of U17s netball.
Awards: Milligan Morris – RFNC $, Lexie Wilson – Hadar Homes.

The Under 15 team is still working through the best rotations for the team, as the game progressed, it became clear that more frequent rotations within each quarter are needed, particularly in the heat, to maintain a fast-paced and effective midcourt.
The team is continuing to gel well and is working hard to put into practice the strategies discussed at training. They are showing great maturity, a strong commitment to development, and a real willingness to work together as a team.
There was great strength across the entire squad, with every player stepping up and fulfilling their role. You should all be proud of your efforts. Keep working hard at training and the rewards will continue to come.
Awards: Skye Lush – RFNC $; Flick Watson – Hadar Homes Hotshot.

A great Easter game with rotating the whole squad. Playing against friends seems to make the girls try harder. We finished the day with an interclub match giving the girls a great run.
