The event, organised by Cohuna Secondary College students, aims to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
Cohuna Secondary College leadership team member and classroom teacher Shannon Treacy explained the student-driven initiative.
“Part of my leadership role is student voice and engagement,” he said.
“We have a Student Voice team and students can volunteer to be part of this team.”
The students regularly meet to discuss school improvements and community activities.
“Whether that is something as simple as casual dress days or lunchtime activities, anything like that, and also things that we can do in the community as well,” Mr Treacy said.
“Hence, the Mother’s Day Classic is one of the things students like to do.”
The event features both 5km walk and run options starting at 9am, followed by entertainment, raffles and prizes at 9:55am.
“The Mother’s Day Classic is a very, very important topic in that it raises awareness, which is probably the big thing, I think, and obviously it raises money as well,” Mr Treacy said.
The course follows a scenic loop through the Cohuna Recreation Reserve, past the two ovals, and into Gunbower State Forest.
Last year’s event created a supportive atmosphere for those affected by breast cancer.
“In the past, the feedback has been that it is a lovely spot to go and walk, very relaxed, nice, clear, open track,” Mr Treacy said.
“People were able to share their experiences and we had a lot of people there, just talking.
“It was a really, really vibrant morning.”
The family-friendly event welcomes pets and prams, with Susie Q Coffee providing refreshments.
Parking is available along the main street or near the water towers.
