Young riders lead Anzac march in Barmah

More than 100 people gathered in Barmah to mark Anzac Day, with a strong community turnout and a prominent role for young riders in this year’s service.

The morning began with a march at 9.30am, followed by a commemorative service set against the Murray River backdrop.

Nathalia Pony Club district commissioner Brodie Michalaidis said it was encouraging to see young people involved.

“It was really nice to see the kids being a part of the parade,” she said.

About 20 children on horseback took part, reflecting the important role horses played in wartime history.

“We strongly encourage for the kids to understand the history,” Ms Michalaidis said.

The service drew participation from a range of local organisations, including the fire brigade, contributing to what Ms Michalaidis described as a large and meaningful event for the town.

This year’s commemoration also highlighted the role of women in war, with a nurse on horseback included as part of the parade.

Ms Michalaidis said Anzac Day remained an important occasion for the Barmah community, bringing people together to remember those who served.
