The 17-year-old was chosen for the Burras squad on the back of a strong performance in the Domestic Series, a week-long selection camp on the Gold Coast earlier this month.
Lowndes will hopefully represent the Burras in curtain-raisers before the men’s senior national team the Kookaburras take on Malaysia next month.
The squad is made up of 27 players and includes representatives from every state.
It is the first time Lowndes has been selected to a national squad. He has previously played for Victorian representative sides and was also selected to the under-18s futures program last year.
He will also play for Victoria in the national under-18s tournament starting next week in Cairns, with an eye on the under-21s national championships in July.
Lowndes first started playing hockey for the Echuca Moama Hockey Club, joining the River Rats when he was nine years old.
He and his family moved down to Melbourne last year and he is studying at Maribyrnong Sports Academy.
Lowndes now plays for Camberwell in the Victorian Premier League, the same club his father, Bryce, used to represent.
