As Echuca College Year 12 students walked out of their first exam yesterday, English, the relief on their faces was easy to see.
English teacher Rhonda Gale said the students she had spoken to were quite happy with their performance.
‘‘It was very fair. I think the students would have been able to address the questions quite confidently,’’ she said.
Echuca College students studied Interpreter of Maladies and Cosi for the text response section of the exam, and A Streetcar Named Desire and Spies for the writing in context section.
The final section — analysis of language — required students to respond to a blog post about tattoos.
It is the first time the English exam has used a blog post as a text.
Principal Chris Eeles said students’ VCE results had improved during the past four years.
‘‘I hope the trend continues upwards,’’ he said.
Today’s VCE written exams are biology and further mathematics.
Echuca College students had mixed reactions to the English exam.
Stacey Lindner said, ‘‘I’m happy with it but it was much different to what I expected. The questions were much different to what I studied.’’
Alyssa Godfrey said, ‘‘I’m glad it’s over. It was on the track of what we studied in class.’’

Master craftsman Michael Keefe has produced yet another magnificent Red Gum Cup for Echuca Racing Club.
The major award for tomorrow’s big meeting was made with 1873 timber from the old Murray River Sawmill and Echuca Racing Club secretary, Ian Hart, said the club was delighted with Michael’s superb work.
The cup will be presented to the winner of the main event tomorrow and the jockey and trainer will also receive smaller replicas of the trophy.
“I’m happy with the way it came up and I’d like to thank Steve Buckley for donating the timber,” Michael told the Riv.
The work of art took a full day to produce and Mick De Rooze gave finishing engravement touches to it on Friday.
A big crowd is expected to flock out to the Echuca racecourse tomorrow to witness the Red Gum Cup.

Present indications point towards a capacity crowd for the ballet display by Thea Pritchard’s students next Thursday and Friday.
Organisers of the ballet concert anticipate that all seating facilities at St Andrew’s Hall, the venue for the concert, will be taken.
Many parents, friends and relatives of dancers have already purchased tickets.
Excellent scenery has been designed by Dorothy Dalton while Mr Bill Pritchard has perfected lighting effects from misty colours to bright psychedelic forms.
Costumes for the concert have been designed by the instructor, Thea Pritchard.
Highlight of the concert will be the performance in the ‘magic’ cave by the ‘baby’ class dancers.
Junior class dancers will mime the favourite story of The Ugly Duckling along with Peter and the Wolf.
Performing in the “Village Dancers” will be the intermediate dancers while the senior students will come to the fore with varied presentations.
These will be Raindrops, Walking in Space, Spanish and jazz followed by a scene from the classic Ballet Class, with music by Chopin.
Proceeds from the concert will be shared by the Presbyterian guild and the St Mary’s Mothers’ Club.
