The Felines girls had a convincing win against a young but determined Wangaratta Rovers at Barkly Park over the weekend. Coach Brad Nicholson made more moves than Kevin Sheedy as adjustments were made to the line-up throughout the match. Rotations were not only on and off the ground but forward, backline and centre. The positive aspect was that everyone had a go in the forward line and in the centre and it was pleasing to see the young girls rise to the occasion and get involved with seven different goal kickers.
The team welcomed Lola Walsh and Olivia Cheeseman, who played their first game for the Felines. Both these girls were fantastic out on the field and meshed with the team as if they’d been there all year.
The open team scored a great win against Wangaratta Rovers.
In a tight and tough game, the backlines of both sides were on top and it was difficult to score. Each team had the ball rebounding quickly from their defensive halves. For the Felines, Kaitlin Muscat played a great game and consistently cleared the ball form the half back flank with her long raking kicks. Likewise, Kaitlin Robinson dominated from full back and often had to back herself in to leave her direct opponent to get to the contest. Likewise, Emily Nicholson continued to pick up marks and possessions through the centre of the ground.
The Felines were more accurate in the first half to lead by two goals at the main break, with both teams having the same number of scoring shots.
After half time, the Rovers hit a purple patch with two quick goals set up by their poster girl, Kylie Barton. Suddenly, the Felines were back under the pump and had to dig deep to stay in the game. Even though no goals were scored in the last quarter, it was a tense, pulsating contest. Both teams were able to rebound the ball quickly with the Felines enjoying the majority of the possession. The whole team lifted to continually hold out the Rovers attacks. The Rovers had cleared the ball from their backline and were off to the gallops when the final siren sounded. The Felines were able to come away with a 7 point win to present the young coach, Darren Simpson, with a great birthday present.
A pleasing aspect of the game was the contribution from the Felines’ less experienced players. Brianna Davies was attacking the footy with passion and determination, Danielle Dalrymple is continuing to improve by the week and Samara Ferguson is getting involved more every week. Thanks to Sophie Nicholson for stepping up again and playing with a fierce attack on the football.
This week the Murray Felines host the Wodonga Raiders at Barkly Park. Once again, the Felines welcome any of their supporters to come and cheer them on. They would especially welcome any enquires from girls who are thinking about giving football a go.
