Exactly one year since the baton passed through town, Barry is hoping the 17 batonbearers will meet in Echuca for a reunion.
Barry said he has put a call out on Facebook and has received a response from one batonbearer who was keen for the reunion to go ahead.
‘‘I don’t expect people to travel too far for the reunion, so I’m not expecting those from Deniliquin to come because it’s just to reacquaint with each other,’’ he said. ‘‘It’ll be a bit hit-or-miss — a spur of the moment thing. If I get half of the 17 there it would be great.
‘‘It (carrying the baton) was such a big event in our lives and it was special for different reasons for everyone.’’
Barry, who was nominated for his work with the Echuca Starweavers Association, said he was hoping the group could be local champions to raise awareness of issues in the area.
‘‘The work of the One Million Stars to End Violence was good, but there is so much more to do,’’ he said.
Barry is planning for the reunion to take place at Aquatic Reserve, Echuca on February 15 at 4pm.
Our batonbearers were: Maisy Edwards and Sarah Young (Deniliquin), Sandra Kadri, Christopher Kadri, Lee Wanganeen, Keith Hearn, Helen Barnes, Robert Foran, Barry McDougal, Alexandra Kent, Nicholas Hall, Ruth Membrey and Col Pearse (all Echuca) Nick Mioni (Kyvalley), Natalie Murphy (Moama), Richard Ronnan (Lockington)and Sharelle McMahon.
Barry said he would like to hear from anyone interested to call him on 0435134264.
