Ms Santilla was selected as this year’s artist for SAM Spotlight, which the museum described as an exciting, profile-raising exhibition for the regional artist.
Her unique exhibition used sculpture and drawing to bring together a fireplace scene.
Ms Santilla said guests would be invited to sit in the chair in the space and contemplate what they were experiencing.
Her work is heavily influenced by animals and in particular their interaction with humans.
‘‘I am particularly interested in creatures that polarise or have difficult, complex histories involving their interactions with humans and the processes of remembering by recording traces and liminal states,’’ she said.
Ms Santilla spoke about the personal stories attached to each art piece during the artist talk at SAM on opening night recently.
She said it was a new time in her artistic career as she transitioned into being more professional and added she had the utmost respect for SAM due to its support of local artists as well as ceramic artists.
Ms Santilla said she was excited to have been chosen as this year’s SAM Spotlight artist and SAM curator Lara Merrington said it had been a joy working with Ms Santilla.
‘‘I’m delighted to have worked with Maree,’’ she said.
In addition to her exhibition, Ms Santilla will be conducting childrens’ art workshops on March 30 and April 12 at SAM.
The workshop on March 30 will be held from 11am, with times to be confirmed for April 12.
