A resident has reported that an automated voice claims Aussie Broadband has been trying to contact you, their customer, for three days with no success.
‘‘The voice then said we’d like to give you options and tells you to press one, I knew it was a scam but I pressed one to see what would happen,’’ one Echuca resident said.
The voice then changed and it was a man claiming he worked at Telstra, the resident hung up and had the same scam call later in the day.
‘‘I called Telstra and they said they had a few people calling in about the same thing, and they confirmed it was a scam,’’ the resident said.
‘‘People need to be wary, I have never had a call regarding it and then I get two in the one day — it’s nothing to do with Telstra.’’
And it’s nothing to do with Aussie Broadband, said general manager corporate affairs Janet Granger-Wilcox.
‘‘Aussie Broadband does not leave voice recorded messages for customers asking them to press one, or any other number,’’ she said.
‘‘These calls are definitely a scam. We have heard many reports of a similar scam impersonating NBN as well.’’
‘‘We encourage anyone who has been the target of such a message to report it to Scamwatch and if you have any concerns about whether a message has come from Aussie Broadband, feel free to contact us on 1300880905.
‘‘We’d also encourage people to let relatives, friends and neighbours know about these scams.’’
Similar scams have been targeting residents, with callers claiming to be from NBN Co, a company which ‘‘will never make unsolicited calls or door knock to sell broadband services,’’ NBN Co chief security officer Darren Kane said.
‘‘NBN may make calls to individuals registered on our medical alarm or fire and lift registers but will never request payment or bank account details during these calls.’’
NBN also does not request payment in relation to matters with medical alarms.
“NBN Co is the company building and operating Australia’s wholesale broadband network, and as a wholesale only company we do not sell broadband packages directly to consumers,’’ he said.
‘‘There are times when NBN Co may contact you directly as part of the network rollout, but never to request payment for services over the nbn network.
Both Aussie Broadband and NBN encourage residents who received a scam call to report it at scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam
