Police are investigating after the three-year-old girl was bitten on the head and face by an unknown dog at a McCulloch Drive property about 10am last Sunday.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said family members took the girl, who suffered deep cuts to her face and head, to Echuca hospital but was airlifted soon after to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a stable condition.
She spent two days in hospital, undergoing facial surgery which included re-attaching part of her ear, according to a family member.
The man, who did not wish to be named, said the Wodonga child had gone to Moama to see her grandparents when the attack occurred.
‘‘She was in a fair bit of pain so she’s very slow to recover and is not herself,’’ he said.
‘‘It will take a bit of time before she gets back to normal.
‘‘I’m sure this will have some kind of impact on her down the road.’’
Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said officers were told a stray, black-haired medium dog had bitten the child.
‘‘We’re investigating the circumstances of the dog attack,’’ he said.
‘‘We have received information and are following it up.’’
The matter has also been referred to Murray River Council rangers.
A spokesperson said ‘‘council is in receipt of an alleged dog attack which is currently under investigation’’.
