NSW Police Association executive member for southern area 1 Roger Campton said NSW Police Force’s Police Property Group recently inspected the almost 70-year-old Maiden St building.
‘‘It was described as the worst layout for a police station in the state,’’ he said.
Mr Campton is among several groups, including Murray River Council and Committee for Echuca Moama, pushing for a new police station to be built in Lawry Park as the existing building is not fit-for-purpose.
With no progress on a new station, Mr Campton said he had been informed Moama and Corowa police stations were a priority for the Murray River Police District.
‘‘The current station is no longer suitable for the current staffing levels, let alone any future increases that may be allocated,’’ he said.
‘‘The officers at Moama are disheartened that there has been no progress on this issue. They feel they have been forgotten.’’
Mr Campton said all the Moama officers lived in the local community, with many of them raising families there too.
‘‘They work as hard as they can to give their local community the policing services it deserves but resources can only be stretched so thin,’’ he said.
‘‘There is simply not enough police to staff the station.’’
However, Mr Campton said all calls for assistance and reports of crime would be attended to 24 hours a day. He said he looked forward to working with new Member for Murray Helen Dalton on this matter and other policing issues.
Mrs Dalton said ensuring adequate facilities and staffing in our basic services was a priority, particularly when it came to community safety and security.
‘‘The Moama community deserves a fit-for-purpose police station, along with sufficient officers to staff it,’’ she said.
‘‘We will endeavour to work closely with Moama community organisations to further the progress for new police facilities and call for a review into police staff levels, not just in Moama but the electorate.
‘‘We are still working through the numerous issues facing our electorate and forming appropriate policies.’’
