The art of history

The project was instigated by the Mathoura Art Group which secured funding for it several years ago.

The 1.5m high and 3m wide painting is the work of local award-winning artist/signwriter Greg Chandler, who was commissioned by the group to carry out the work. He based the painting on a photograph taken by historian, the late Jim Crump.

‘‘I put a lot of hours into it. Probably more than 50,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m very happy with the way it turned out.’’

The railway station operated in the era of the historic private Deniliquin Moama Railway and was the half-way point between the two centres.

As well as carrying passengers and freight, the Mathoura stop allowed the train to take on red gum blocks to fuel its engine.
