Most local competitions would be preparing for their fifth round of football this week, but instead players are still not able to come together to train, let alone to play.
With restrictions on social gatherings, clubs are battling to find ways to stay prepared for the potential chance the season will resume.
But AFL Victoria is urging players, officials and supporters not to give up hope on a season.
In a statement to the community, AFL Victoria said all state and territory bodies were working towards a restart.
“Rest assured, the AFL and its state and territory affiliates have a dedicated team of people working diligently to explore what this might look like for our clubs and communities,” it said.
“Understandably, we are still uncertain about the exact date of commencement for our game, but we want to provide you with some certainty about the actions and next steps we are taking from a national AFL approach.”
The release said the AFL and its state and territory bodies were working in accordance with state and federal government policies, as well as the medical authorities and acting on their advice.
The statement also said modified formats were being examined as part of AFL Victoria's attempts to begin the season whenever it is given the go ahead to start playing.
But the key takeaway from the statement is AFL Victoria will keep working towards playing football and netball this year.
“Importantly, we have not given up on this season,” it said.
“We are hopeful that we will be back on the field as soon as it is safe to do so and you can be confident that you will have our full support to ensure this return is as safe and well prepared as possible.”
AFL Victoria will look to provide a further update to leagues soon.
