No financial support could be given by the Australian Government for the proposed licensed Moama Country Club, the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, Mr Frank Stewart, said in Moama on Wednesday.

Accompanied by the Member for Riverina and Minister for Immigrations, Mr Al Grassby, Mr Stewart spent about an hour discussing sports and recreation facilities with local sporting bodies and representatives of the Murray Shire Council.
Mr Stewart said that although he could not make any finance available for licensed clubs, he did strongly support the proposals of the establishment of multi-purpose recreational facilities which catered for the whole family.
Chairman, Cr Jim Hickey, outlined the plans for the establishment of the country club and association sporting and recreational facilities.

An undertaking that a Liberal-Country Party Government would seek restoration of Saturday postal services will be welcomed by the residents of the Riverina area which has been seriously inconvenienced by the reduction in mail services.
Mr John Sullivan, endorsed Country Party candidate for Riverina, stated that the reintroduction of the mail is in line with his Party’s vowed policy of improving the way of like for rural residents.
Apart from this, it will be welcomed by the community generally, as it has ‘’hit’’ everyone from children through to the farming and rural town business people.
The education of children on correspondence courses has been disrupted, together with the technical and university education of older members of the community.

After a trip with houseboat proprietor, Mr Vern Stack aboard one of his Murray River Cruisealong crafts on Wednesday, the newsmen said that they were impressed by the river and the City of Echuca.

Echuca was chosen as a typical, historical river town and included in a tight 10-day schedule which has taken the journalists from Sydney to Brisbane, through Charlesville, Birdsville to Alice Springs, where they saw the annual Bantail Muster, down to Adelaide and across to Echuca.
25 years ago May 1999
Following amendments to the plans for Echuca’s $3.5 million multi-cinema and performing arts complex, a planning permit has been lodged with Campaspe Shire.
A notice of an application for a planning permit by Southern Star Enterprises has been advertised in the Riverine Herald, in accordance with the Planning and Environment Act.
The revised design plans will also go on display at the Echuca offices and customer service centres across the shire from today until May 25.
The final plans for the new complex include three commercial cinemas and a 400-seat performing arts complex.
If approved, the facility would replace the existing Paramount complex.

Sen Constable Val O’Neill was among those who visited McDonalds Echuca on Saturday, coinciding with McHappy Day.
Sen Constable O’Neill presented owners Tony and Judi Lawler with a certificate of appreciation from Echuca police for their support during the year on various youth projects.

Saturday’s McHappy Day and the new McHappy month aimed to raise money for more than 200 charities, including Ronald McDonald House, Camp Quality and the Starlight Foundation.
Mr Lawler said the store raised almost $1000 on Saturday and a total of almost $2300 for the month.

Dedication to preserving the environment and the rivers is something that should be rewarded ... and now it is following the launch of the RiverCare2000 program.
The annual RiverCare2000 awards, run by the Department of Land and Water Conservation, were launched regionally this year with the Murray region section for 1999 opened at the fifth meeting of the Murray and Lower Darling Community Reference Committee at Rich River Golf Club.
Individuals and groups in the Murray region have been recognised widely for their participation in gaining accreditation of projects under the scheme.
Mixing work and play in 1999: Bill Boucher (left), George Larcome and Bill Williams were at the Moama-Echuca Adventure Playpark recently to help prepare the structure for the coming winter months. The playpark has to be regularly painted with a mixture of oils that will preserve the structure for many more generations of children.

Member for Rodney Paul Weller remains confident the Victorian Government will make a major announcement on a new bridge for Echuca-Moama later this year.
Mr Weller met with Transport Minister Terry Mulder on Wednesday after the bridge missed out on funding in Tuesday’s Victorian budget.
While he could not offer a definite time frame, Mr Weller was confident of an announcement after VicRoads completes its environmental effects statement.
He said Mr Mulder also outlined the potential for early work to begin once an announcement was made.
‘‘The EES is due to be completed in August at which time the government will be in a much stronger position to make an announcement,’’ he said.

After receiving a share of $1 million in Tuesday’s Victorian Budget, principals at three Echuca schools will next week learn more about the planning process.
Member for Rodney Paul Weller said Education Minister Martin Dixon would make further announcements about the Budget allocation.
Echuca West, Echuca South and Echuca Specialist schools could soon begin plans to develop a consolidated school in Echuca’s west.
Echuca South Primary School acting principal Kelvin Millar welcomed the news, saying staff, students and parents were happy with the news.
‘‘We are very happy. It is nice to know the money is there,’’ he said.
‘‘We understand that the wheels of government turn slowly.
‘‘Once we heard the land was secured we were confident it was a matter of when, not if.’’

Ben O’Dea will happily blend in with a sea of students, schools and businesses dressed in orange today as part of Wear Orange for One and All day.
Blending in, in a more general sense, is something the seven-year-old, who has Down syndrome, and his family are grateful to the One and All Campaspe Inclusion Project for.
One in, all in: Lauren O’Dea, 9, Ben O’Dea, 7, and Jamison McFadden, 8, are excited about One and All Day which promotes social inclusion for everyone.

It has changed the life of each member of the O’Dea family — especially the relationship between Ben and his older sister, Lauren.
