Acting Regulatory and Community Services general manager Kate Lemon said with an increased number of foxes in the area, the program was essential for the protection of wildlife.
“Fox baiting programs in previous years have been very successful protecting habitat for many kangaroos, possums and bird species,” she said.
The program will also allow for a proposed future release of squirrel gliders into the reserve.
“The reserve has recently been nominated as a safe release site for squirrel gliders, due to its variety of understorey shrubs,” Ms Lemon said.
Squirrel gliders have a conservation status of endangered in Victoria and have a very high risk of extinction in the wild.
Release of the gliders is a long-term plan.
“The reserve’s selection as a suitable site for squirrel gliders is exciting news for the Kyabram Landcare Group as well as the wider community,” Ms Lemon said.
“The reserve will remain open during the control period and will be safer to enjoy however it is important that dogs are kept on leads as per existing requirements.”
The program is currently under way and will finish on Friday, April 24.
