The O’Connors began Mistletoe Limousin stud in 1993 and have enjoyed some success in the ring.
“Last year we won the supreme exhibit with our heifer Mistletoe Sweetcake,” Denis said.
“We took four animals and managed a first, second and third in three different female classes.”
Mistletoe Limousin will be offering 18-month-old and two-year-old bulls for sale, 12-month-old bulls to view and females which include siblings and dams of the bulls.
The O’Connors’ show team for the 2023 Limousin National Show and Sale will also be on display.
The stud has gradually evolved its herd away from horned to predominantly polled beasts and most of the cattle on display will be polled.
Semen from overseas homozygous sires over the past 10 years has resulted in the stud’s own homozygous polled bulls.
“We have got about four of the five going to the national who will be homozygous poll,” Denis said.
The use of polled sires has embedded the polled gene into the herd while keeping the desired Limousin traits.
“Our females calve easily, and their progeny have very good growth,” he said.
“They are quiet and have the amount of fat cover that the market is looking for while still retaining their high yield, especially of the more expensive cuts.
“The female portion of the calves are recognised for their yield and are rarely discounted when compared to the male calves’ portions.”
All animals are BREEDPLAN recorded and part of the Limousin Assurance Program.
Denis invites any visitors to celebrate the stud’s 30-year celebration.
