Operation Chrome will see police from Moama and Mathoura work alongside traffic and highway patrol officers today and tomorrow, aiming to reduce road trauma by targeting risky driver behaviours.
Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said enforcement and education were the focus of this weekend’s operation.
“Country people are dying on country roads, with the upcoming Christmas holiday break it is an opportune time to engage with as many road users as possible to reinforce safe driving habits,” he said.
“It is incumbent on all persons within the vehicle to ensure that the driver is not distracted, fatigued or putting all their lives at risk.”
More than two thirds of all NSW road fatalities occur on rural roads.
This year, there have been 11 fatalities on roads throughout the Murray River Police District.
Southern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar said police would continue to target those doing the wrong thing on rural roads.
“Rest assured, we will be taking legal action against those who choose to do the wrong thing and put the lives of others at risk,” Asst Comm. Cassar said.
“Country roads have a fatality rate that is more than four times that of their metro counterparts, so it’s really crucial that we address this issue and work together to stop these devastating events from happening in the first place.”
