St Mary’s Echuca has cancelled all masses and events at the parish.
In an email to its parishioners, Fr Des Welladsen said they are still in the process of making opportunities for prayer and worship available in alternative forms, but encouraged continuing with personal and family prayer.
The parish is also setting up a support network to help the elderly and people with disability and people in isolation.
“We would like to arrange early morning transport and support to enable those who cannot drive or who find it difficult to negotiate the supermarket.”
“As people are required to be in home isolation, there will be a need for people to deliver necessities, we will endeavour to set up a register to know who those people are and in turn who could act as a delivery service. We will also try to establish contact networks for people in isolation to receive phone calls or some sort of contact/support,” an email to parishioners said.
Christ Church Anglican Reverend George Hemmings said they are also suspending regular services for the time being to best serve the needs of the community, however there will still be an opportunity for personal worship.
“We will be open this Sunday from 9am-1pm for people to come and pray and we’ll have relevant safeguards in place to protect people’s health,” he said.
“Our op shop will also remain closed for the foreseeable future.”
Echuca Community Church will go ahead with its Sunday service, pastor David McAllan said their congregation is under 100 people so they will continue while still taking precautions.
“We’ll have people sitting as a distance, no contact and washing hands,” he said.
