Echuca and Moama police will be targeting the fatal five as part of their respective Easter campaigns - Operation Nexus and Tortoise - from Thursday to Monday.
Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said Operation Tortoise would see officers targeting drunk and drug driving, speeding, mobile phone, fatigue, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences; all of which will attract double demerit points.
“COVID-19 will obviously impact our police operations but police will still be out and about interacting with road users,” he said.
“It goes without saying that it's incumbent for everyone in the car to be mindful of their welfare, so if you know the driver is doing the wrong thing, tell them to stop and modify their behaviour.”
Insp. Huggett said officers would also be patrolling forests and national parks targeting people breaching public health orders.
“People who are out camping or in breach of social distancing laws could find themselves the subject of a $1000 fine,” he said.
“Now is not the time to be out on the roads unless it is absolutely necessary.”
Over the river at Echuca, highway patrol officers will be doing the same thing.
“Don't drive unless you have to and if you have to, be safe,” Leading Senior Constable Paul McCracken said.
“While we're not expecting people to be travelling, we'll be carrying out our normal duties, so people can still be intercepted.
“We'll be targeting the usual, drink and drug driving, speeding, road safety and distraction offences.
“We're hoping for a quiet weekend.”
