Echuca Historical Society to open Chinese exhibition

The exhibition tells the story of some of our earliest residents — the Chinese — and why they made Echuca home.

Chinese market gardeners arrived in Echuca in April 1865 and by 1892, there were 17 different Chinese paying rates on land.

Others had experience as bankers, storekeepers and interpreters, general labourers and even a river boat owner/captain named John Egge.

There were many marriages between white women and Chinese men on the goldfields and then in towns to where the miners moved when the hunt for gold failed.

You can even find out about the burning tower.

The exhibition will open daily from 10 am to 2 pm from July 1 to August 10.
