The path runs on the outbound side of Perricoota Rd from the Cobb Hwy intersection except for a 300m gap between Perricoota Place and Tindarra Resort.
Regular tourist to the area Ric Nolde has been visiting Echuca-Moama every few months for the past 20 years, and said in 2017 he was nearly knocked off his bike by a truck outside Perricoota Place while riding on the road because there was no path.
In the years since, he’s contacted Murray River Council and said he'd received a “pretty poor response”.
“I was told it would be reviewed when the new bridge work is completed; it’s ridiculous because it’s got nothing to do with the bridge,” he said.
“It shouldn’t take my efforts to wake people up to a major hazard for bike riders and pedestrians.”
Murray River Council engineering director Scott Barber said this part of the road easement did not have a footpath because there “is very little space between the road and property boundaries, and the space used is for stormwater drainage”.
“Local ratepayers prefer to use the path past Tindarra to Boundary Rd to go to the Woolworths, into Moama and/or walk to Echuca as it is shorter and easier than walking along Perricoota Rd,” he said.
Mr Barber said in the past 12 months the council had extended the path west from the cemetery to the Water Treatment Plant.
“Council will investigate inclusion of this extra section of path along Perricoota Rd in the 2021-22 budget,” he said.
“This will not simply be a process of adding more path, however, as council will need to get permission from the neighbouring properties, dig out and install underground drainage and a pump to move the water away, as the ground is very flat in this area.”
