The proposed changes would see all-day parking zones axed on Murray Esplanade, High St, Leslie St, Hopwood Pl, Watson St and Heygarth St in Echuca, in favour of two-hour and four-hour zones.
But councillors were unable to reach an agreement at the September council meeting and instead voted to defer the decision until December.
Cr Annie Vickers said a three-hour zone would be the better option, giving tourists enough time while deterring workers from taking the parks all day.
“Both tourists and locals will be walking a distance,” Cr Vickers said.
“It (the three-hour time limit) gives them the chance to wander up and down High St and spend some time to see what we are offering the public.”
Seconding the motion, Cr Vicki Neele said the longer time limit would allow people to explore the town.
“With the two-hour limit, by the time you’ve got out of the car, gone on a boat ride or gone out for lunch and get back, you’re pushing it in that two-hour time limit,” Cr Neele said.
That motion, however, was not supported by the rest of the councillors.
“This is just staggering. We’re making something up on the run,” Cr Neil Pankhurst said.
“I’m against this based on the number of changes that have been made based on the urge of one councillor, after all the discussions that have been had around this matter prior to it coming to council.
“I find it difficult to understand the implications of this motion.
“I’m just unsure of the justification for it.”
Cr Pankhurst moved the item be deferred to the December meeting, a motion which was passed.
