With former AFL star Neale Daniher becoming the public face of the condition throughout Australia and the FightMND focal point being the Big Freeze at the Queen's Birthday AFL match between Collingwood and Melbourne, the two have become inextricably linked in the past 10 years.
In 2021, the Echuca Football and Netball Club will play a key role in fundraising and spreading the message as an activation club for FightMND.
The club — with the help of a number of its sponsors — will look to sell 2000 FightMND beanies for the cause, before running an activation day for the June 12 match against Mooroopna.
The day will see players from both sides take part by wearing SockIt2MND football socks.
Echuca FNC president Ash Byrne said the cause was something that had become huge within the wider community, and something the club wanted to be involved in.
“Personally I have seen the impacts of the condition,” he said.
“And in our wider community unfortunately it's something that has impacted someone they know.
“Through the attention that Neale Daniher and the FightMND group have brought to the condition in recent years, people are more aware of the condition than ever. It's a horrible condition and one we are desperate to find a cure for.”
Mr Byrne said he hoped the game would draw further donations.
“It's something we are naturally looking forward to,” he said.
“Obviously we are hoping to sell as many beanies as possible, then we are hoping to see more donations made out of game day against Mooroopna.”
Currently, Echuca's beanies are available at the Caledonian Hotel, Charles L King and Co, Cosgriff Lawyers, Echuca Hotel, Echuca Moama Physiotherapy, Eishold Property, EMM Group, Insurance House, Lockwood Partners, Longs Electrical, Moama Newsagency, Morley Auto Group, Naughtons Pools and Spas, N8 Health and Switched On Electronics.
