Over 60 talented cast members, aged between eight and 18, have been selected to bring the production to life – while developing confidence and teamwork skills, and mastering the fundamentals of musical theatre performance.
Sophie Connor and Maddisyn Marsh will each step into Matilda Wormwood’s shoes for three nights of the production.
Sophie, who aspires to one day play a part in a professional show, said she loved the art of performance.
“My favourite thing about the show is being able to perform with all of my new friends that I have made,” she said.
“I’ve learnt how important it is to work well as a team.
“I think (audiences) will enjoy (the show) because of how talented everyone is and because it is such an inspiring show.”
Madisyn said the show was filled with humour, and the most talent she’d ever seen – and that she couldn’t wait for audiences to watch it.
“My favourite thing about the show is being part of a community of like-minded people all enjoying themselves,” she said.
“Before I auditioned for a role in Matilda Jr, I had a passion for singing.
“Since being part of this community and seeing all the talent and how the teachers have inspired me, I now know when I grow up, I want to be on the stage singing and acting.
“I’ve learnt that I own the track, the track doesn’t own me.”
Both leads agreed that Eden Edgley-Fletcher, who’s set to portray antagonist Miss Trunchbull, brings a humorous light to rehearsals.
Eden instead thinks it’s the sometimes “brutal honesty” of the kids he performs with that sends him into laughter.
“Matilda Jr is an incredible show that is able to balance its humorous moments with valuable morals,” he said.
“I especially appreciate that a musical such as this can teach younger audience members the importance of doing the right thing.
“This production has taught me countless lessons that I will carry with me for ever — most importantly, I have learnt the importance of deep connections and how far a strong friendship can take you.”
SPW’s Youth Theatre School is all about nurturing young performers, and also offers opportunities for students to gain backstage experience, shadowing sound and lighting technicians.
Directed and choreographed by Kimberly Read, Matilda Jr is also being brought to life by an experienced team, who also mentor emerging creatives.
