The book is the first of four instalments in a fantasy series about a world where wolves are separated into kingdoms with different political systems and laws.
“The story is set in a world called Celestial where there are different nations of wolves that have laws governing them where they can’t cross into each other’s territory,” Kailyn’s mother Bronwyn Pisano said.
“It centres on a princess named Dawnfire who falls in love with a prince from a rival nation; it’s a love story filled with lies, betrayal and mystery.”
Ms Pisano discussed how Kailyn’s journey began as a child who enjoyed playing video games and getting lost in her imagination.
“How it started was that Kailyn is an avid gamer, and she loves to create storylines around the games she plays, she said.
“She came to me and said she wanted to create a script to turn into a play or even a movie one day.”
The nature of Kailyn’s education has allowed her to dedicate learning time to write the novel, which she started when she was 11 up until six months ago when the first draft was completed.
“She’s home schooled, and we decided that instead of doing English, she would spend every day trying to write one or two pages; it’s taken her two years to complete,” Ms Pisano said.
“I only read it about six months ago, and when I did it, the quality blew me away; it was excellent,” she said.
“It’s amazing; it’s a real tearjerker; I was crying twice when I read it; I just can’t believe a child can write like that.”
When Kailyn and her mum decided to try to get the book published, they contacted publishing houses but were met with rejection and told to wait for the demand for kids’ books to rise.
“A lot of the publishers that we approached weren’t looking at publishing children’s books right now and told us to wait a year or two, and we both decided we didn’t want to wait, so we decided to self-publish it,” Ms Pisano said.
“When she finished the book, we sent it to an editorial assessor to ensure that there were no holes in the story and that everything flowed naturally, and she got feedback from them to make some important changes, such as rewriting the last five chapters of the book, then we sent it to a proofreader for final checks.”
Ultimately, Kailyn managed to get her book published and will be available online to purchase from various sources in mid-March.
“There are numerous websites where you can pre-order and buy the book, including Amazon for paperback editions, Kindle for digital editions and Books Online Australia,” Ms Pisano said.
