The historic tower is now 110 years old, but remains an important part of the local water system by delivering water pressure via gravity to the surrounding community.
Work on the tower’s facade began last year, with scaffolding and temporary fencing installed to ensure public safety.
Due to the tower’s age, Coliban Water regularly inspects it to determine required maintenance and repairs.
“In October, we began additional works which included commissioning a structural assessment to guide longer-term repairs and maintenance,” a spokesperson said.
“The structural assessment report indicates that the tower remains stable, and no immediate structural failure has been identified.
“However, there are signs of deterioration in part of the tower.”
A series of projects are under way to ensure community safety and the continuity of water supply in Echuca.
New protocols will reduce the volume of water held in the tower, and works across the company’s network will guarantee adequate water pressure in town.
External and independent engineering advice obtained by Coliban Water has informed the company’s approach to managing the tower.
The spokesperson said Coliban Water was working closely with Campaspe Shire Council, the CFA, SES and Victoria Police.
“It is likely that the tower may need to be demolished in the coming months,” they said.
“This is disappointing, given the history of the tower. However, due to this assessment and the expected ongoing deterioration due to its age, we are prioritising and managing the tower’s potential long-term safety risks.”
Coliban Water will continue to keep residents and businesses updated as its plans progress.
