The Doug Fraser Memorial longest drive tournament was held on the East Course’s par-five first hole, where the Matthew Grenot-thumped ball disappeared off into the distance.
Needless to say, New South Welshman Grenot won the competition.
Rich River pro Richard Caiolfa remarked after the drive, ‘‘You wouldn’t have wanted to stand at the end of the fairway, that’s for sure.’’
The longest drive and pro-am tournament were warm-ups for the Rich River Trainee Classic, where more than 100 of the best golfers in training come from all over Australia to compete in four rounds on Rich River’s East Course.
Local golf enthusiasts teamed up with Trainee Classic competitors to charge around the course in search of bragging rights over their mates.
Come the end of the pro-am, it was local business Forty Winks owner Scott Worsnop teaming with fellow amateurs Jack Keogh and Craig Machonachie, and guided by pro Jamie Stapleton, who gained the bragging rights, ending the day with 95 points.
As of the Riv’s deadline yesterday, round one of the Trainee Classic was still under way with Victorian Travis Tatt (-5) leading by one shot over New South Welshman Luke Humphries.
