The garden is tended to every Monday by the VIVID Hub Shed team members, who water, fertilise and care for the garden beds.
HRJ Upcycling’s Kristy Bird approached VIVID as a way to engage with the community more, and build on the company’s relationship with VIVID.
“We decided to come up with the idea of having a community garden to show people how you can reuse and recycle materials to build a veggie garden,” Mrs Bird said.
“We thought that we should do our own, and something for the community.
“VIVID come every Monday and help us water and they helped plant the plants.
“We work alongside each other at Christmas time doing the wooden Christmas that we make, and then I touched base with them to see if they’d like to work on a community garden.
“The crew that come here are the Hub Shed group, and they’re learning about vegetable growing in their program.”
The VIVID team also painted the signs in the garden, filled the garden beds with soil, and planted all of the plants.
All of the garden beds are made on-site at HRJ from materials that come through the business.
“We had just used an old tractor tyre here that we needed to dispose of, so we decided to use that for one of the beds, and we had bathtubs and shower bases, and a burnt out wine barrel,” Mrs Bird said.
“Everything is repurposed from old materials.”
The garden is open for locals walking or driving by to pick from at the front of HRJ Upcycling in Echuca St, Moama.
“Anyone walking past or stopping by can help themselves, and as the seasons change, we’ll replant according to the seasons,” Mrs Bird said.
