From the annual music muster to the monthly Jigarre Jammin’ program, Girgarre’s musical roots have nourished some of the finest talent in the region — but this upcoming event is just for the young ones.
The Showdown at the Soundshell is back at the Girgarre Botanic Gardens on Sunday, March 29, inviting young solo performers, duos and bands featuring artists aged between 12 and 18 on to the stage to show off their musical chops.
But, there’s no showdown without those willing to battle it out.
Showdown organisers Paul Colyvan and Jan Smith are putting out a call out for youngsters wanting to amplify their musical talent.
Mr Colyvan, a seasoned musician who calls Rochester home, said the event provided young musicians with a unique opportunity to both compete and learn.
“It gives the kids a platform,” he said.
“They don’t have to win it, but they will experience a big show, professional sound, how to do a sound check, and have the experience of being applauded by a large crowd.”
The event has helped the careers of some of the finest young talent in the region.
And while there have been success stories, it’s the stories of improvement and triumph of kids who come back year after year that impress and inspire Mrs Smith.
“People don’t understand the talent these kids have,” Mrs Smith said.
Experience is key in the music industry, so the Showdown at the Soundshell presents a unique opportunity for young artists to get exactly that, according to event organisers Paul Colyvan and Jan Smith.

“You go down and sit on the lawn and listen to three hours of these kids — of mainly good quality — performing, and having fun.
“The pride they have in themselves is lovely to see and seeing them step off the stage with a smile on their face and get a hug from their parent — it’s something kids don’t get to experience a lot.”
For those who need incentive, there are a few prizes up for grabs including $1000 for the top performer and $250 for second and third place.
There are also a few bonus awards, including one that could see the winner enjoy a session in a local recording studio mentored by Mr Colyvan.
But the pair hope to inspire young people to participate, not just for the prizes, but for the invaluable experience of performing before their peers and community.
“We want to see as many kids as we possibly can,” Mr Colyvan said.
Entry to the Showdown at the Soundshell is free on Sunday, March 29 at the Girgarre Botanic Gardens.
Food trucks and a free community barbecue will be available on the day.
