Shepparton Punjabi community leader Dharmi Singh confirmed on Tuesday that the four men — as well as the driver — were all Punjabi.
“They (the men who died) were visiting friends in Shepparton,” he said.
They also may have been doing some work in the area.
“They were all new to the (Shepparton Punjabi) community,” Mr Singh said.
The driver had been in Shepparton longer than the other men.
The five men were in a Peugeot hatchback travelling south on Pine Lodge North Rd and a Nathalia man, 29, was driving a Toyota HiLux ute west along Cosgrove-Lemnos Rd when the crash happened on Wednesday, January 4.

The four passengers of the hatchback died in the crash, while the driver was flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital.
While the man remained in hospital in Melbourne on Tuesday, January 10, Mr Singh said he was now “out of danger”.
The Nathalia man was taken to Goulburn Valley Health but has since been discharged from hospital.
Police investigations into the accident are continuing.
