Murray River Police District officers were at a skate park on Blair St, Moama on Friday, January 23 when a staffy-cross escaped a parked ute and bit a three-year-old boy’s arm, police said.
After separating the dog from the child, the dog allegedly continued to be aggressive.
A NSW police representative said a senior constable “discharged his firearm” striking the dog on the back of its leg, leaving it with “minor injuries’’.
A 35-year-old man who police allege to be the owner took the dog back to his ute and drove away.
The boy who was bitten had minor injuries and was taken to Echuca Regional Hospital for treatment. He has since been released.
Police later intercepted the man driving a different vehicle — a sedan — on the same street where the attack occurred.
On inspecting the sedan, police found more than $92,000 of cash and a small amount of cannabis, the police representative said.
Police said checks revealed the man’s South Australian driver's licence had expired in 2014.
The man was taken to Moama Police Station and charged with two counts of driving unlicensed, three counts of possessing prohibited drugs, two counts of supplying prohibited drugs, one count of recklessly dealing with proceeds of crime and one count of goods suspected stolen in or on premises.
He was refused bail and is expected to appear at Albury Local Court next week.
At about 7.30pm, police and Murray River Council rangers located a 42-year-old woman walking the dog allegedly involved in the attack on Chanter St, Moama.
The dog was seized by council rangers and the woman was charged with allegedly possessing prohibited drugs and issued a court notice.
The police representative said it was “unknown” which drug she was possessing as investigations had not been completed.
The woman is due to appear in Moama Local Court in April.
NSW police said investigations were ongoing.
