Callers to 000 reported a motorcycle had crashed into a tree near the intersection of Carag and Rushworth-Girgarre Rds at around 3.40pm on Saturday, August 23.
The rider, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
Police say they witnessed the motorcycle being ridden erratically on Rushworth-Girgarre Rd about five minutes before the crash
Officers attempted to intercept the motorcycle, but the rider sped off.
Police did not pursue the motorcycle.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident.
As is standard procedure after a fatal collision, following recent police contact, Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation.
The death brings the current Victorian road toll to 188, four higher than the same time last year.
