The three-year agreement would guarantee annual funding of $20,000 plus GST through to 2024 to support the work of the chamber in professional development, promotion of Greater Shepparton as a solid business community, and advocating for industry and infrastructure for the city.
A previous MOU which ran from 2017 to 2020 provided financial and in-kind support from the council up to $40,000 annually.
While the new agreement provides greater funding certainty, it also comes with strings attached.
The MOU lists a range of activities and items that the funding can’t be used for including alcohol, catering, sponsorships, memberships and activities that have a detrimental impact on the reputation of either organisation.
The funding can be used for education, networking events, strategic work and events that “activate” the central business district.
The MOU commits the chamber to regular reporting and co-operating with the council on business attraction, events, and to encourage members to adopt consistent extended trading hours to maximise economic stimulus within the CBD area particularly to support major events.
The MOU is on the agenda for the monthly meeting of the council on Tuesday, July 20. Due to COVID restrictions, the meeting will be virtual and streamed live through the council’s Facebook page.
The meeting is set down for 3 pm.
