Blues triumph over arch-rival in final round of Picola District Football League

Picola United has locked in a date with Tungamah in the first round of Picola District Football League finals after vanquishing rival Mathoura in the final round of the home and away season.

Travelling to face the winless Timbercutters at Mathoura Recreation Reserve, the Blues got off to a solid start, nailing a trio of goals and holding the host to one.

Picola United began to spread its wings in the second period, nailing five majors in the lead-up to half-time, while Mathoura kept pace with two maximums.

The Timbercutters tallied their final goal for the match in the third term, but the Blues kicked four in the same time to blow the lead out to 52 with a quarter to play.

Adding two minor scores to its total down the stretch, Mathoura was on the receiving end of a five-goal barrage to end the game, with Picola United cruising to an 82-point victory.

The final score was 17.11 (113) to 4.7 (31).

Hayden Brown went ballistic in front of goal for the Blues, drilling a bag of six, while Tom Byrnes was awarded best-on-ground in the win.

With the regular season now complete, Mathoura will look to 2026 for a more successful campaign after being unable to find a win in 2025.

Meanwhile, Picola United will clash with sixth-placed Tungamah, with both sides only separated on the ladder by percentage.

It’ll be win or go home for the Blues on Saturday, but the team will feel confident going in, having already beaten the Bulldogs in round 12.
