The Moama Echuca Border Raiders senior women’s side has moved back into the top four thanks to a 3-0 win over Epsom FC on Saturday.

Three goals in 11 minutes midway through the first half had the Border Raiders in a great spot at half-time.

Asha Davies opened the scoring with a strike from outside the box, before Jessica Burn and Jessica Hicks added goals two and three shortly after.

A resolute Raiders defence stymied any chance of an Epsom comeback, with Moama Echuca comfortably seeing out the second half to claim victory

Hicks is the Border Raiders’ co-captain and said it was a great win on Saturday.

“It was a very exciting game, it was very fun,” Hicks said.

“We were in our forward half for about 80 per cent of the game. We had a lot of the ball and we started to move the ball really well.

“We got the ball out of defence very quickly and effectively.”

Hicks said she thought Alexandra Romano, Ryshelle Taylor and Bronwyn Macague all had great games.

“Ryshelle shut down one of their best attackers and didn’t let them get through on goal,“ she said.

“Alex as our centre back did an amazing job controlling the backline and Bron played exceptionally well in the midfield too.“

Hicks herself was named player of the match and was awarded with a special medal to celebrate female football.

It’s a handy result for the Raiders after a loss and a draw in their previous two games.

Moama Echuca now has three wins, two losses and one draw so far this season.

Meanwhile, Moama Echuca’s senior men’s team is still on the hunt for its first win after falling to Deniliquin Wanderers 5-0 in the league cup.

Josh Perizzolo scored four of Deniliquin’s five goals, netting two in the first half and another two after the break. Martin Thomson scored the fifth for the Wanderers.

It was the Border Raiders’ second loss in the League Cup, a separate competition to the regular season, and their sixth loss this year.

The result is more lopsided than the 1-0 win for the Wanderers the last time the two sides met, but Moama Echuca coach Jonothan Keele said it was not an accurate reflection of the game.

He said the Raiders again showed considerable improvement from the week prior, a 13-0 loss to Swan Hill, with the team having multiple good chances on goal.

“It was unfortunate we didn’t score, we probably had double or triple the opportunities that we have had in previous games,” Keele said.

“The score should have been a lot closer than it ended up.”

He said Patricio Rodriguez was good in the midfield once again, while Evan Kostoglou also had a great game in his season debut.

Keele said James Mawson played well up front and in the midfield, while defensively Kyle Griffiths had a good game at centre back.

The Raiders won’t have to wait long for a shot at redemption against Deniliquin, with the two sides set to face off again this Saturday.
