A Moama Bowling Club Cricketer of the Year, Bowler of the Year and dual awards for the Tennis Players of the Year will be officially launched in the coming week — as seasons get under way.
Every Wednesday in the pages of the Riverine Herald, and for subscribers to the digital version of our newspaper, there will be an update of the standings in the award.
The $1000 cricket award will combine both the men’s and women’s A-grade Goulburn Murray Cricket Association competitions.
There are nine teams in the A-grade men’s competition for the 2021-22 season and five women’ teams.
Only Echuca, BLU and Leitchville-Gunbower women’s players will be eligible for the Cricketer of the Year award from the women’ competition, points being awarded for runs, wickets, catches and stumpings.
Points will be awarded on the following basis: one point for a run, five points for a catch or stumping and 10 points for a wicket.
Male players from Echuca, Moama, Rochester, Leitchville-Gunbower, Lockington Bamawm United, Nondies Cohuna, Kyabram Fire Brigade, Echuca South and Cooma will all compete for the prizemoney.
The winner of the Cricketer of the Year will pocket $500, with the runner-up earning a cool $250, third placegetter $125 and $75 for fourth, courtesy of the major sponsor Moama Bowling Club.
Finals will not count toward the award as the competition will end on completion of the home and away season.
The Bowler of the Year award will be split across two Saturday division one competitions as Moama this year fields teams in the Premier divison of the Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields and also in the Campaspe section of the new bowls region.
The leading skip for the season from the two competitions will be awarded a lion’s share of the $1000, which I am certain they will make available to the valuable members of their four member teams.
Our sports journalists, Meg Saulty and Josh Huntly, will be awarding the Bowler of the Year award on a percentage basis — measured on shots for and shots against for the home and away season.
As with the Cricketer of the Year award, finals will not count toward the Bowler of the Year. The winner of the Bowler of the Year, which includes Echuca, Moama, Rochester, Tongala, Mathoura, Deniliquin and Rich River, will pocket $500, with runner-up $250, third $125 and fourth $75.
When it comes to the tennis competition there will also be players from two associations competing for the prizemoney — the Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association and Campaspe Tennis Association.
The $1000 prizemoney will be split in half — $500 for the male component of the award and $500 for the female component of the award.
Again, the award will be measured on a percentage basis.
It will take into account games won and lost, providing us with the percentage which will be how we measure the top performers of the season.
In both the women’s and men’s awards the split of prizemoney will be $300 for the winner, $125 for runner-up and $75 for third.
Only home and away games will count toward the award.
