Across the Campaspe Playing Area, this year’s finals series has been one for the underdogs.
That trend continued in the midweek pennant division three decider, another minor premier falling at the final hurdle.
After logging a less than stellar 6-8 record in the regular season, Deniliquin RSL came into its own over the finals, completing its trifecta of postseason wins with a 37-33 win over favourite Moama.
The battle between RSL’s Ron Marchetti and Jan Sullivan ended level, both squads putting up 21 shots.
It meant the other rink would decide the contest, Rod Reid narrowly scoring it 16-12 to earn RSL a memorable championship.
RSL had to run through all three fellow finalists, also including Echuca and Elmore, on its way to the title, this win over a Steamers side that had suffered only one defeat in the season the most impressive result among them.
