Echuca-Moama Pickleball Club sent a contingent to The Big Chill event in Canberra, held from March 20 to 23, and the locals came home with two medals.
In the 60+ women’s skinny singles (skill 2.99 and under), Helen Mubariz made a run all the way to the final, only dropping one set in the group stage, before defeating Echuca-Moama teammate Gail Miller in the semi-final.
Miller would finish in fourth, while Mubariz came close in the decider against Cinea Ryan, but ultimately fell 15-12, 15-10.
Miller and Mubariz teamed in the 60+ doubles, but didn’t progress past the group stage.
Geoff Beard and Echuca Moama’s Shaquile Mubariz teamed to a bronze medal finish in the 60+ men’s doubles.

On the men’s side, Shaquile Mubariz teamed with Hunter Pickleball Club president Geoff Beard in the 60+ men’s doubles (skill 3.-3.49), the duo fighting their way through the round robins, but falling at the semi-final stage.
Facing up to a duo that had defeated them earlier in the tournament, the pair turned things around in a big way, sweeping the bronze medal match 11-1, 11-6, to take home the third-place medals.
The Echuca Moama Pickleball Club runs five sessions weekly at the Echuca Stadium, Echuca College or Twin Rivers Primary School, with more information available on the club’s Facebook page.
