In the club’s first race since October, Quambatook 1, 13 trainers released 290 birds from the marked liberation point, near the intersection of Kerang-Quambatook Rd and Normanville Rd, north-east of Quambatook.
The race began at 10.30am on Saturday, August 2, with birds making their way back to their owners’ respective lofts.
There was a significant disparity between the distance required for the competing trainers, with the longest journey of 156km, and the shortest at 107km.
To account for this, races are judged by the average velocity birds achieve on their journey.
Merrigum’s David and Christine Hutchison, whose birds had the longest journey, scored the win with a velocity of 922.19 metres per minute, closely followed by Kyabram Wests’ P.K. King and Sons, who recorded 921.65.
Fellow Kyabramites Gary Rayner, Peter White and John Carroll were the next best finishers, while C., R. and D. Robb was the best Echuca competitor, finishing sixth.
The next pigeon club race, scheduled for August 9, will see birds depart from Sea Lake.
