Tongala preys on hapless Hawks

Tonny never really gave the Hawks much of a look in at Barooga Recreation Reserve and the host went without a goal until the final term.

Cameron Ilett started off the Blues’ scoring with the first two majors of the contest and Tongala led 22-1 at the first break.

Another five goals in the second would blow the margin out past 50 by half-time and an even bigger third period had the Blues more than 100 points clear at the last break, eventually falling just shy of a 150-point win.

Ilett would finish with a team-best four majors, while Matthew Daniel, Nate Dear and Max Trigwell all added three.

Jae Bowden managed the lone major for the Hawks.

Alex Williams’ efforts earned him best-on-ground for the Blues.

Mathematically, Tongala still has hope of securing a finals place, two games back from sixth-placed Numurkah and Rumbalara, who are level on points.

The Blues enter a must-win encounter with Echuca United this week at Tongala Recreation Reserve, where the loser is all but certainly eliminated.

Should Tonny get through that game, the road becomes even harder as the side finishes its year with each of the current top four in succession.
