It was a clash between two debuting clubs in the women’s league, with Moama getting its first side off the ground this year, and Cobram stepping in to the Goulburn Murray Women’s League after Barooga’s departure from the AFL Goulburn Murray umbrella.
The two sides engaged in a low-scoring arm-wrestle, the defences remaining on top throughout the contest.
Neither side could put the finishing touches on an attacking move during the first half, both clubs having to settle for minor scores, with the Mowers ahead 4-2 at the main break.
The shackles were broken shortly afterwards as Moama slotted its first goal as a club, and the Mowers would add a second in the fourth, matching Cobram for the term, to come away from their inaugural game 2.4 (16) to 1.3 (9) winners.
Lucy Hillman and Ruby McLeod got Moama’s first two club goals on the board in the win.
Captain Tori Russell headed up the best-on list, which also featured Sophie Callahan, Rhiannon Severino, Grace Riddell, Ayrlea Clark and Zoe McCallum.
Moama will hold its home opener this Sunday from 2.30pm, taking on the reigning premier, Shepparton United.
Youth Girls
The Mowers premiership girls side had a much easier time against the Tigers, running up a big score in the opening Goulburn Murray Girls League round.
Moama wasted no time getting the scoring under way, booting six majors in the opening term while allowing only one from the Cobram attack.
The Tigers would go scoreless through the middle quarters, while the Mowers added four goals in the second and five in the third to build an insurmountable lead.
Cobram slipped two through to win the final period, but the day was Moama’s, 16.6 (107) to 3.1 (19).
Captain Ruby McLeod led from the front with five goals, while Chloe Ryan added four, Elli McCallum and Sophie Millar two each, and Charlotte Christie, Amelia Morris and Taya Nathan each chipped in one.
The bests included Ryan, Millar and Morris, alongside Hannah Sara and Eliza Leeds.
Moama matches the women’s side’s fixture again this week, also facing off with Shepparton United at home in a rematch of last year’s girls grand final.
The game begins at 1pm on Sunday.
